Meet the court

Let’s meet the hardest working Virgo in showbiz, the Knight of Pentacles.

Meet the Knight of Pentacles (IRL) - Beyonce

It might actually be criminal to select anyone other than Beyonce for the Knight of Pentacles (IRL). Born in Houston, Texas, on September 4, 1981, Beyonce is a Libra rising, Virgo sun, and Scorpio moon. In addition, she has notable Libra stellium, including her Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto. She's the perfect air/earth blend to represent the Knight of Pentacles, but her empire wasn't built in a day. Remember, the Knight of Pentacles plays the long game. It's all about planning and execution.

In her early years, Mrs. Carter (formerly Ms. Knowles) dominated Texas' local talent shows and pageants. She was a triple threat - singing, dancing, and acting. As a teen, Beyonce, her cousin, Kelly Rowland, and two classmates formed a little singing group you may have heard of called Destiny's Child. Beyonce's father, Matthew Knowles, acted as the manager. There were a few changes in the band roster before they landed a deal with Colombia Records in the late 90s. They launched a self-titled album that helped them grow in popularity, but they didn't find themselves in the public eye until their second album, "The Writing's On the Wall." Their first number 1 single from the album was "Bills, Bills, Bills," followed by "Say My Name." Destiny's Child underwent a few more casting changes in the following years. Finally, they landed on the iconic three we know and love today - Beyonce, Kelly, and Michelle.

While enjoying the group's success, Beyonce started branching off into solo singing and acting projects. Her first significant acting role was "Carmen: A Hip-Hopera" in 2001, followed shortly by starring in one of the Austin Powers movies, opposite Mike Myers.

In 2003, Knowles released her first solo album, "Dangerously in Love." It became a massive success, and "Crazy in Love" was voted the song of the 21st century by NME. Around this time, it was rumored that she was romantically involved with rapper Jay-Z. However, the couple was not publicly acknowledging their relationship in the early 00’s.

Destiny's Child split up in 2004, and Knowles continued with her solo career. Her second album, "B'Day," did incredibly well, and she starred in “Dreamgirls” alongside Jennifer Hudson, Jaime Foxx, and Eddie Murphy.

Things kept slowly and steadily growing for Beyonce. 2008 was another big year for her. In a small, private ceremony in NYC, she married Jay-Z. Later that year, she released her third album, "I am...Sasha Fierce." The song "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" demolished the charts, and she returned to the big screen that year, playing Etta James in “Cadillac Records.” In January 2009, Knowles also sang for Barack and Michelle Obama at the inaugural ball. Then, at the 2010 Grammy Awards, she took home a staggering six awards. At the time, this broke the records for most wins in a single night by a female artist.

In 2012, Knowles and Jay-Z welcomed their oldest daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, to the world.

By 2013, Knowles had won 16 Grammys. That year, she performed for the Super Bowl Halftime Show and wowed the crowd. Then, she "broke the internet" with her surprise self-titled album (and my personal favorite) "Beyonce." The first of its kind, the album was released with no press or promotion, exclusively on iTunes, and was a visual album. Physical copies later were available for purchase. This album launch broke records, selling more than 800,000 within 48 hours of release. "Beyonce" marked Knowles as the first female artist to debut five album releases at number 1 on the Billboard 200. It was also the fastest-selling album in iTunes history.

In late 2015, rumors began swirling that Jay-Z had been unfaithful, and in 2016, Knowles returned to the Super Bowl stage with Bruno Mars and Chris Martin. She performed her new single "Formation," and again was met with rave reviews. Two months following the performance, Knowles released "Lemonade." It was an iconic conceptual film/album in which she spoke openly about Jay-Z's affair and their reconciliation. It's an indisputable work of art and some of her best work to date. This album also debuted at number 1, making her the first woman to have six albums debut in the top spot.

Then, in 2017, she and Jay-Z welcomed their twins, Rumi and Sir, to the world. Her birth announcement on Instagram was the year's most-liked post, with 11.1 million likes. She had been initially scheduled for Coachella's 2017 lineup but had to cancel when she found out she was pregnant with the twins. Then, in 2018, she became the first Black woman ever to headline the event. She documented the preparation and performance in the Netflix Documentary "Homecoming." The marathon performance and documentary are iconic. I think we all know that Beyonce works nonstop, but this documentary showed it. Knowles and Jay-Z also released a joint album the same year.

In 2019, Knowles played Nala in The Lion King reboot, and then in 2020, she directed, wrote, and produced the visual album "Black is King."

To say her career has been legendary is an understatement. In total, she's received 1,357 nominations worldwide for her work and won a staggering 542. If there's anything Virgo and The Knight of Pentacles know inside and out, it's the value of hard work, and no one works harder than Mrs. Carter.

Bullet (Journal) With Butterfly Wings

(Gosh, I hope some of y’all are old enough to get this reference…)

Pick up a habit of regular bullet journaling this Virgo Season!

  • Of course, to get started, you need a journal and something to write with. It can be as fancy or as simple as you like. Notebooks can be ruled, blank, or dot gridded. Ruled works best for folks who are looking to do journal-style entries. Dotted journals are best for habit trackers, spreads, and lists. Blank journals are for our doodlers. They work really well for people who like to create non-traditional spreads and include lots of artwork on the pages.

  • This part requires that you think about how you want to use this journal. Bullet journals can be really beautiful, but if they aren’t also functional for what you need them for, you may as well just have a sketchbook. Common spreads include:

-Daily/Weekly/Monthly Planner Spreads - these are great for writing down all of your appointments, events, and critical tasks to be completed on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.

-Future Logs - similar to a daily/weekly/monthly spread, but future logs show all of our monthly/yearly larger commitments in once place.

-Productivity Pages/Habit Trackers - these layouts are utilized for building habits. Common activities include: water intake trackers, hours/mins of daily reading trackers, etc. Lots of tarot readers track daily pulls and relevant astrological transits with trackers like this. These trackers can also be used to track “bad habits” you’d like to stop. For example, marking the days since you quit smoking or didn’t spend more than X number of hours on a social media app…you get the idea.

-Mind Maps - If you’re brainstorming or you need to consider the multiple outlooks/outcomes/perspectives around a problem, mind maps are the way to go!

-Brain Dumps and Lists - This spread format can be a catchall for our mental “junk drawer” of tasks that don’t really fit in other spots within our journals. “To be read” and “to be watched” lists are also very common, and of course, we can’t forget lists of goals.

-Traditional Journaling/Free-writing Spreads - this one is a bit self-explanatory. If you’re someone with something to get off your chest each day, this is where to dump it!

-Doodle pages - If you’re someone who needs to focus your mind by moving your hands, doodling pages are a must!

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but you can see there are layouts for everything. Now, the hard part, you have to decide what types of spreads and layouts would be useful for you life and what you’re trying to achieve.

  • This is the fun part. It’s time to get creative! You can search various bullet journal layouts for inspiration on Google and Pinterest. When you have an idea of what layouts you’d like to experiment with, you can decide on fonts, color schemes, and art supplies you’d like to use to create the vibe you’re after. You’ll def need a pencil (I know, who even uses them anymore?) But they’re great for lightly tracing our layout plans before going in with the “heavy artillery” (calligraphy markers, washi tape, highlighters, etc.)

THIS TAKES PRACTICE, and we all know Virgo is a bit of a perfectionist. you will make mistakes. Don’t let it overwhelm or discourage you. A few tips:

-Don’t compare your bullet journal to others’. You know what they say, “Comparison is the thief of joy.”

-Use pencil to plan your layouts before you go in with ink.

-Use washi tape, stickers, and white out to correct mistakes and “blend them in” when you can.

Always remember, the beautiful thing about a bullet journal is that you always get to turn the page and start fresh when you need to.

  • Yes, bullet journals are beautiful, but we can’t forget the core purpose. We’re doing this for self-improvement, and to build some organization and structure into our lives. The act of consistently setting aside time for bullet journaling is part of that structure. Whether you choose to do it daily or weekly, it’s totally up to you. But, the idea that we show up to it regularly is important. If Virgo Season has taught us anything, it’s that what we feed, grows. So, if we’re interested in working bit by bit in the short term towards our long term longs, showing up is the first step in that work.
