Meet the Queen of Pentacles (IRL) - Lizzo

Taurus Sun, Melissa Viviane Jefferson (AKA Lizzo), was born on April 27, 1988, in Detroit, Michigan. Lizzo has a Taurus stellium in her 10th House, including her Sun, Jupiter, Mercury, and Midheaven. In addition, she's a Leo Rising and a 2nd House Virgo Moon. To say she's earthy is an understatement.

Venus rules over the arts (including music), and Lizzo has been musical from birth. Her family were members of a pentecostal church, and Lizzo grew up in the gospel music scene. When she was 9, the family relocated to Houston, Texas, where she got into rapping. In 5th grade, she began playing the flute, and she eventually went on to perform in her high school marching band. In her teens, she also formed and participated in several hip-hop groups.

After high school, she earned a full scholarship to the University of Houston, where she studied musical performance. Her original plan was to continue with her studies at the Paris Conservatory and eventually go on to play in concert halls. But, throughout her college years, she continued with both flute and rapping. She was performing in shows regularly and decided to drop out of college.

She joined a prog-rock band, but her father passed away shortly after, and Lizzo left the band and briefly moved to Denver to be near family. It was a short stay (not even a year) before she moved to Minneapolis in 2011. Here, she became immersed in the Minneapolis music scene, performing with multiple groups and even being taken under Prince's wing.

during this time, She signed with Atlantic Records and put out her 2016 EP Coconut Oil. She moved to LA, got a gig hosting a live music program on MTV, and even opened for some pretty big names, including Sleater-Kinney and Florence + The Machine. Her label released her single "Truth Hurts" in 2017, and it was a flop. She was sort of an underground thing for a minute there. I remember seeing her perform at a drag event in NYC before hitting it big, and she seemed to have a small cult following. After Truth Hurts didn't perform as she'd hoped, she debated leaving the music industry. But the track was featured in the movie “Someone Great” in 2019 and became an overnight sensation. From there, she's topped the charts with hit after hit. She received eight nominations for the 62nd Grammy Awards (more than any other artist that year), winning 3.

But, it hasn't all been fun and games. The singer has come under numerous public attacks rooted in racism and fat-phobia. One of the big things that makes Lizzo's Queen of Pentacles/Taurus/Venus energy so apparent is that she loves herself, and not like in the performative Dove soap commercial way. She is comfortable in her body. She enjoys food. she enjoys fashion. She is a beautiful and talented fat Black woman who loves herself and isn't afraid to say it. This is Empress and Queen of Pentacles energy. It's the idea that we deserve to be abundant. We deserve to love and accept ourselves. we deserve to make and enjoy beautiful art in our time here, and we deserve to define what beauty and comfort mean to us.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 cups epsom salt or apple cider vinegar (Your choice)

  • 3-4 drops rose oil

  • 3-4 drops jasmine oil

  • 3-4 drops Lavender oil

  • 1 cup jasmine tea

  • 1 rose quartz

  • fresh or dried flower petals

Instructions:

Combine all of the ingredients into a hot bath, and soak away! epsom salts contain magnesium, which is great for sore muscles. Or, if you opt for apple cider vinegar, it’s great for all sorts of skin concerns due to its natural anti-microbial properties. Rose oil and rose quartz are staples for Venus work (this is a taurus season bath, after all). Jasmine is great for self-confidence, lavender is calming, and flowers just look pretty. I like to fix myself a fancy seltzer water and binge TV on my phone, listen to a podcast, or read a book/magazine. Anything that helps you rest and recharge is the goal here.
