Meet the Court
Ready to meet some Libras with big charm and even bigger intellect? Let’s meet the Page and King of Swords (IRL).
Meet The Page of Swords (IRL) - Donald Glover
Few people are as fresh, thoughtful, and innovative as Donald Glover. FX President John Landgraf says, "Underestimate Donald Glover at your own peril. He's remarkably multi-faceted. I look at Donald first and foremost as a creator, but also as an entrepreneur – someone who is almost boundaryless who can do almost anything [he sets his] mind to."
On September 25, 1983, Donald Glover was born on an air force base in California. He is a Virgo rising, Libra Sun and Pluto, and a Taurus Moon, the perfect air/earth blend to represent the Page of Swords (IRL).
When he was a child, his family moved to the Atlanta area due to their interest in the city's historical ties to the civil rights movement. They moved to Stone Mountain, a predominately white suburb of Atlanta, so that Donald and his siblings would have access to better schools. The area is known to have had historical (and present-day) ties to the Ku Klux Klan. In fact, it's cited in several articles as the "KKK's Modern Birthplace." Glover has spoken openly about how being one of the only Black families in the area (and being Jehovah's Witnesses) created a certain sense of alienation throughout his childhood. These themes surface in his more recent public work, where his projects have taken on a more political vibe.
Glover's father was a postal worker, and his mother worked in a daycare. Aside from his biological siblings, the family was also known to foster children. Donald has described his household growing up as chaotic from time to time.
Interested in the stage from an early age, Glover acted in numerous high school productions and eventually went on to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and graduated in 2006 with a degree in dramatic writing. While he was still in college, he landed his first writing gig. Tina Fey hired him as a writer for "30 Rock." He was only 23. The whole thing just feels very Page of Swords.
After the show's first three seasons, Glover left to try his hand at an acting role on the show "Community." Then, he created and starred in "Atlanta," which aired on FX. The premise was an ivy-league college dropout who was managing his cousin's rap career. The show was a hit. It was nominated for six Emmy Awards following its first season. Glover was nominated for four of them and won two – Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, making him the first Black person to ever win an Emmy for comedic directing. The show was so well-received that it also won two Golden Globe awards and a Peabody award. FX signed Glover to a development and production deal in January 2017.
Glover also made his way into film. He took on roles in "Solo: A Star Wars Story," the 2019 reboot of "The Lion King" alongside Beyonce, and "Guava Island," a short film co-starring Rihanna.
In addition to all of the writing and acting work, he also has a successful music career under the name Childish Gambino. Fun fact, the name was generated by a computer, the same one Wu-Tang Clan used! He's put out four albums. The first was "Camp" in 2011, followed by "Because the Internet" in 2013, then "Awaken My Love!" in 2019, and most recently he released "3.15.20." His lastest album was reportedly to cheer people up during the pandemic. However, his 2019 album is where we really start to see his work take a more political turn. "Awaken My Love!" is full of profound commentary on the US' broken and unjust state of affairs, particularly around systemic racism. His single "This is America" made history in February 2019 as the first hip-hop track to win Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the Grammys. Glover has received many nominations for his writing, acting, and singing -152 in total, with 44 wins.
Glover has been in a long-term relationship with his wife, Michelle White, for years. The couple is incredibly private, so there isn't a lot of public info regarding exactly how long they've been together. They have three children together, and he is reported as being very dedicated to her. (How very Libra!)
Looking at this list of accomplishments, it's hard to believe Glover is so young. But that's the power of the Page of Swords. They're "ideas" people!
Meet the King of Swords (IRL) - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) is the youngest woman ever to be elected to the senate. She was born in the Bronx, New York, on October 13, 1989. She's a Sagittarius Rising, Libra Sun (and stellium), and Aries Moon. So, she's the perfect air/fire blend to represent the King of Swords.
AOC was born to a working-class, Puerto-Rican family. She attended Boston University and simultaneously interned for Ted Kenndey, focusing on immigration issues. In May 2011, she graduated with a degree in economics and international relations and moved back to the Bronx. She worked as a community organizer for a while. However, her family was feeling the effects of the recession. Her father passed away from Cancer when AOC was in college. Her mother was cleaning houses to support two children. It was a constant fight to keep the home out of foreclosure. To help her mother, AOC supplemented her nonprofit position by working multiple jobs as a server and bartender. She has publicly credited serving work as being responsible for her thick skin. "I got really, really, really good at listening to people, and I got really good at understanding people's needs, beyond just food and drink," she said. "But I also had to grow a really thick skin to deal with rude customers and harassment."
At the time, Joseph Crowley was an undefeated 10-term Democratic Congressional Candidate in NY's 14th District (AOC's community) who hadn't faced a challenger in 14 years. As a result, he had become lazy and complacent in his role. He was largely absent from the area, completely out of touch with the people he represented, and he wasn't working on policy based on the needs of his constituents. The only thing he did seem to be effective at was fund-raising for his campaigns.
After watching her family and neighbors struggle, AOC had had enough. It was time to do something about the politicians who weren't in touch with what the local community was dealing with daily. She didn't have Crowley's funding, but she had airy ideas and a fiery sense of drive. She launched her bid in May 2017 with fewer than 300 Twitter followers. Her Facebook live streams often weren't even breaking 100 likes at the time. Her campaign was grassroots. She went door to door and personally spoke with people in her community. It was refreshing for them to see a candidate who looked like and lived as they did. She ran on a platform that included abolishing Immigration and the Customs Enforcement Agency, Medicare for all, green energy, higher wages for the working class, higher tax rates for the wealthy, and tuition-free college.
Crowley was un-phased by the newcomer. He had the funding. He had won 10 consecutive times. What did he have to worry about, right? Well, as it turns out, he had a lot to fear. In her campaigning, AOC spoke to Crowley's absenteeism. She understood the crushing financial burden on the working class, and she was able to talk to people from a place of empathy and lived experience, not from a mansion in another state. People responded, and things moved quickly from there.
In April 2018, The NYC Branch of the Democratic Socialists of America endorsed AOC, and by May 2018, her campaign video was viral. Then in June 2018, AOC beat Crowley by 15 points. By July, AOC was touring the US with Bernie Sanders to campaign for progressive candidates. Then, in November 2018, AOC won the general election with 78% of the vote, becoming the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. In January 2019, she was sworn in with the most diverse class of congresspeople in US History.
She was re-elected for a second term on November 3, 2020. Since her election back in 2019, AOC has been vocal and polarizing for Democrats and Republicans. Her work includes contributions to the Green New Deal, which aggressively aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. She's also been particularly vocal on reproductive rights and border issues throughout her time in office.
Regardless of your opinion on her policies, she is absolutely the King of Swords (IRL). She's intelligent and driven, with a strong sense of justice and fairness. She knows how to work within the system to change the system, as is so characteristic of the Kings. There's often a common-sense quality to the King of Swords, and she's got it. Where so many people would have said, "I can't run against Crowley. I'll never win." She understood that she didn't need PAC funding as long as she had relatable ideas and dedication to the goal.
Make Some Space for Venus with DIY Friendship Bracelets
Neurodivergent brains - busy hands - color magick - and of course, classic Libra aesthetic…
Sometimes when our minds are active, as is often the case when the sun is transiting through air signs, it helps to keep our hands busy. Research shows that “fidgeting” or general physical activity (such as walking around while talking on the phone) increases levels of the neurotransmitters in the brain that control focus and attention. This is especially common in neurodivergent folks. I have ADHD, and I’ve always struggled with quiet, still activities. There’s this common misconception that meditation/self-care/mindfulness always needs to be quiet and rest-based. That doesn’t always have to be the case. Sometimes it feels good to recharge by doing something creative and enjoying media that helps us escape our minds a little. I’ve noticed is that when my hands or body are busy, my mind gets still. I’m able to focus and think more clearly. This might explain why I obsessively made friendship bracelets like the ones pictured here as a child.
Libra loves relationships, so I figured that old school friendship bracelets would be the perfect DIY activity for libra. There are so many modern takes on this classic. Seriously, do a pinterest or google search for friendship bracelets. The classic embroidery thread bracelets are super cool on their own, but I’ve seen people add metallics in the form of beading, chains, and charms. Designs range from dainty and minimal to super chunky and colorful. So, you can really go wild with the personal sense of aesthetic here.
you can make these for yourself, a BFF, or even your entire friend group - whoever you like! The idea is to create a little space for Venus IRL. Put on a show, album, or audiobook you love. Create an intention for your bracelet. Busy your hands, and let your mind relax.
And of course, it wouldn’t be Magick (IRL) without a little Magickal Twist. Color magick tips below!
