Astroblog 8 - January.27.2019 - The 1st House

For 2019, the astrology blogs will be taking a journey through the houses. We’ll look at planet/sign placements throughout each house on a monthly basis.

First up is the first house!

As we’ve talked about in earlier blogs, the first house is the "House of Self.” The cusp of the first house is known as our “ascendant” or “rising sign,” which is the sign that was coming up over the horizon in the East at the time of birth.

Our ascendent is an important part of our charts. A lot of people describe it as “the mask" we wear in the world. To some degree, this is true, but I also think that it’s more complex than that. Wayman Stewart and I have spoken about this on the podcast a little bit, but in stating that the ascendent is a “mask,” there’s a sort of implication that once you get to know someone, those ascendant traits dissipate or go away…which isn’t always the case. Our ascendant is always part of us. I think of our ascendant as how the outside world perceives us. It’s the way we unconsciously show up in the world. That information may not be the entire picture of who are we, but it is a part of us, and not a part of us that necessarily goes away as soon as someone gets to know us better.

In my work, I’ve found that what we actually project out into the world is a blend of our sun sign and ascendant…this is what makes us all unique!
